    Fairtade Chocolate

The Chcolate Shop is proud to supply chocolate of the highest quality from the following companies knowing that these farmers will receive their fair share of their companies profits.

    Divine

The Story of Divine starts in 1879, when Tetteh Quarshie first brought cocoa to Ghana from Equatorial Guinea.Since then Ghanaian cocoa has developed a global reputation for it's quality and taste.
Today it is one of the country's main exports. In Ghanacocoa is mostly grown on small farms, rather than on large plantations, as cocoa grows best in the humid, shady conditions provided by the rain forest canopy.

Cocoa farming is a precarious business. The trees are vunerable to various diseases and, although chocolate is one of the world's favourite treats, the world price for cocoa often dips below the level at which it pays enough for small-scale farmers to survive.

In 1993, in order to gain more power in an industry where thier voice was not being heard, a group of Ghanaian farmers got together and set up their own cooperative, Kuapa Kokoo.
Kuapa aimed to produce the 'Best of the Best' cocoa, and to work for a better future for its members. At their AGM in 1997 the farmers voted to set up their own fairtrade chocolate company in the UK - and wth investment from Body Shop and Twin Trading, and the support of Christian Aid and Comic Relief, Divine Chocolate was born.

The sucess of Divine means that farmers have a secure source of Fairtrade income which continues to grow as more and more chocolate lovers choose it as their treat. As Kuapa Kokoo also owns a significant percentage of the company, they can share in the profits too. Members decide how the money is invested in their communities and each year more villages can sink their own drinking water wells, build schools, or benifit from healthcare schemes.
Ownership of Divine and the fairtrade deal has also enabled farmers to plan for their future, send their children to school, learn new skills, and improve their farms. The exciting news in 2006 was that the Body Shop decided to donate all their shares in Divine to Kuapa Kokoo - so now those benifite of ownership are even greater.

Whether you choose Dark, Milk or White Chocolate, Chocolate to drink, Chocolate to share, or Chocolate to give, if it's Divine it will not only be as good as it's name, it will also mean that thousands of farmers can be sure of a fairer deal and a brighter future.
